After an adenoidectomy, your child may have a wet, congested nose for several days. Snoring may worsen also, but usually goes away in 2-3 weeks. Let your doctor know if your child is having any trouble breathing after surgery. Your childs voice may sound nasal, with air or liquid escape through the nose. This will usually go away within 1-3 weeks.

ACTIVITIES
Your child may return to school when he/she feels able, pain is minimal, and is able to drink well. This may be as early as 3-5 days or as long as 10 days.
PAIN
Pain is common for up to 3-5 days after surgery. Your child may also complain of pain in their ears or a stiff neck. Give Tylenol (acetaminophen), ibuprofen, or the prescribed pain medicine as directed by your doctor. Call or return to clinic if stiff neck does not improve by 5-7 days.
BLEEDING
Bleeding after adenoid removal is rare. You may notice blood either from the nose or mouth. If you notice only a few drops of blood or blood-tinged saliva, have your child lie down, apply a cold pack to the neck and/or drink cold water. Afrin or neosynephrine nasal spray may also be used for bleeding (1-2 sprays each nostril, repeat in 10 minutes if necessary). If there is more than a tablespoon of blood or you can not stop the bleeding in 10-15 minutes, call the clinic at the number below. If it is after clinic hours or on a weekend / holiday, call or go to the emergency room.

NAUSEA / VOMITING
It is common to have nausea or vomiting for 1-2 days after surgery. You may see a small amount of old, dark blood. Use the nausea medicine prescribed by your doctor as directed. If bright red blood is seen in the vomit, please follow instructions above for bleeding.
A follow up clinic visit will be 2-3 weeks after surgery. This is an important visit to monitor how the nose and throat has healed and to check on any problems your child may be having.
