PRESSURE EQUALIZATION TUBES
REMEMBER: NO FOOD OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT ON THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY
Pressure equalization tubes (PETs) are placed in the eardrum to prevent recurrent infections behind the eardrum (middle ear infection). They can also be placed to prevent fluid build-up behind the eardrum, which can cause hearing loss or lead to further infections.
PETs usually stay in place 6-18 months, most falling out at about 1 year. PETs should not cause pain or discomfort. Most children should be able to return to all normal activities the day after placement of the tubes.
HOME CARE FOLLOWING INSERTION OF TUBES
Your child may have blood stained drainage from the ears for up to 3-4 days. This is normal. Use the provided bottle of ear drops as directed by your doctor. Save the remaining drops for possible future use.
Most children can bathe and swim with their PETs without the need for earplugs. Howevery, your child will need to use earplugs if they swim in lake or ocean water. Some physicians prefer the use of earplugs at all times when your child is in water. The nurse will instruct you on your physician's preference.
If your child has ear drainage while the PETs are in place, use the provided drops for 7 days. Call the clinic if the drainage has not improved in 5 days as a different ear drop may be needed.
Our Surgery Nurse will schedule a follow up clinic visit for you in 2-3 weeks after the PETs are placed. This is an important visit to monitor the tubes. You will be seen about every 6 months thereafter until the PETs have extruded.
